Keeping it live with the Laguna Community Concert Band!

When music educator Carol Reynolds, music professor Dr. Bill Nichols and flutist Theresa Marino met over coffee at Zinc in 1999, they had big dreams—to bring live music to Laguna Beach completely free of charge. That big dream started out small: Only eight players joined the Laguna Community Concert Band the first year.

Today, the band boasts more than 60 musicians, led by codirectors Mark Lowery and Jennifer Baker. They perform a variety of instrumental and vocal selections at venues across Laguna Beach, including the Laguna Beach High School Artists Theatre, the Laguna Playhouse, the Festival of Arts and Fête de la Musique. They have also become an annual tradition at community events, playing patriotic programs at the Patriots Day Parade, welcoming summer with the ever-popular Memorial Day concert at Main Beach, and ringing in the holiday season at Hospitality Night.

In addition to the main band, the group features an excellent swing band ensemble, Laguna JaZz Band, under the direction of Lynn Olinger. This ensemble brings an eclectic blend of jazz, pop and rock to venues throughout greater Orange County. They play several concerts a year at the Susi Q Center and are the featured entertainment for many Laguna Beach events, including the Laguna Art Star Awards and the Laguna Playhouse Gala.

The Laguna Concert Band’s rapid growth and success are a testament to the creative arts environment funded by the Festival of Arts Foundation, the City of Laguna Beach Cultural Arts and Community Assistance Grant Program, and enthusiastic citizens. The organization pays that support forward by nurturing future musicians, offering scholarships to Laguna Beach High School graduating seniors planning to continue pursuing music.
